“Lieutenant William L. Calley, who killed one hundred nine Vietnamese and is to be tried, had taken in and sheltered a Vietnamese girl, lost, starving, wearing tattered rags. To see naked, starving children roaming the streets was a heart-rending sight for Lieutenant William L. Calley. He had adopted this little girl, fed and clothed her, taken care of her. One day, returning from action, he did not find her there. She had escaped. Lieutenant William L. Calley was deeply distressed.” (This was the statement made by the lieutenant’s sister to the New York Post, November 28, 1969.)
